Great Central Sports Tours was born out of the love of playing sport, meeting and connecting with people on and off the sporting field, visiting new places and sporting venues, coupled with decades of experience of managing and arranging sporting activity for grassroots sporting clubs.
As for the Great Central element, the name was drawn from our location – central England – and in particular our own personal roots; on the very doorstep of what was the Great Central Railway which came into and passed through Rugby and back out into the Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire countryside.
In fact Rugby was once a major hub of the railway network in the UK. For many years you could leave the town and head in nine different directions along any of the lines which branched out from here, heading to the likes of London, Nottingham, Leicester, Sheffield, Manchester and Birmingham, even the South Coast.
The Great Central railway in Rugby is sadly long gone having been closed in the late 1960s and locally the route of the former line is now a leisure walk and cycle route on our doorstep (however you can still travel on a preserved section of the original line in Leicestershire).
Whilst it still retains is industrial heritage, nowadays Rugby is more well-known throughout the world as the birthplace of the game (and we offer unique sightseeing and playing tours to our great town to explore this and enjoy).
Yet what really resonates with us is what brought the Great Central and other railway companies to the town in the first place and what was part of their original plans; using Rugby’s central location to create the opportunity for people to travel and explore the UK in any direction north, east south or west.
And it is from here in Rugby and the heart of England that today Great Central Sports Tours create sports tours which can be enjoyed in locations across the UK at all ends of the compass.
